As most of UAB's employees began working remotely earlier this year, many offices realized a need to create digital workflows to make life easier for themselves and their customers.

Among recent projects, UAB IT helped the Graduate School automate several forms to improve efficiency.

"During a time of uncertainty and change, the UAB IT team has been enormously helpful to the Graduate School, so that we can continue providing vital services for our graduate students and faculty with as little disruption as possible, in addition to quickly getting an exception request for continuing research for graduate students and postdocs up and running through an esignature process, the IT team has also automated more than 20 processes that greatly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of our student records and approvals."

- Lori McMahon, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School

During limited business operations, UAB IT's project management office, or PMO, has been involved in a number of process improvements across campus, but the team is also responsible for project management and project planning. Process and workflow improvement can include process mapping, problem diagnosis, process simplification and improvement and software implementation. The team can evaluate which software or technology tool is best for the situation, whether that entails esignature or another automation tool.

The team can also assist with project planning — including charter development, solution requirements, risk mitigation and communication — and project management, including project planning and oversight, risk monitoring, status reporting and oversight of solution deployment. "Every single person we have had the pleasure of working with has been immensely professional, courteous, and eager to help," McMahon said. "Their enthusiasm is very much appreciated."
