The Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic (AVRC) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham  is a component of the Division of Infectious Diseases with UAB's Department of Medicine. Founded in 1994, the AVRC is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is the local site for the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN)--an international effort to find and test an HIV vaccine that will work safely in diverse populations worldwide.

We are dedicated to working with our local community to provide HIV vaccine education and research for people who are interested in joining the fight against the HIV epidemic in the United States and abroad. Though finding a safe and effective vaccination for HIV is our primary goal, we also know that many other diseases are treatable and preventable by utilizing vaccinations; thus, we are also committed to clinical studies that are not HIV-related.

Vaccines can spare both children and adults from suffering and death. Whether we are studying Small Pox, Influenza, HSV-2, or HIV, the AVRC is committed to safe investigational medical research for the benefit of advancing and developing vaccines to fight these diseases.

 Together with the help of our volunteers, we hope to end the devastating effects many diseases have upon the world.
