Our mission to pursue excellence in medicine at the Heersink School of Medicine by cultivating an equitable environment that accepts and affirms all—in the areas of education, research, and patient care—relies on our ability to promote the career development of our diverse workforce. 

This past year, a number of our Black/African American faculty members have taken on prominent leadership roles within the school. To summarize these accomplishments, we’ve outlined a few here.

 

Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS

Dr. Vickers, dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine assumed the role of CEO of the UAB Health System and CEO of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance on January 1, 2022.

Raegan Durant, M.D., MPH

Dr. Durant was named to the new role of associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion on January 14, 2022. Our team looks forward to working directly with Dr. Durant to work toward the mission of our office.

Marie-Carmelle Elie, M.D.

Dr. Elie was welcomed to UAB in January 2021 and named chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Samantha Hill, M.D., MPH

Samantha Hill, M.D., MPH, has been named director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Hill is an assistant professor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics.

Latesha Elopre, M.D., MSPH

Latesha Elopre, M.D., MSPH, has been named assistant dean for Medical Education Diversity & Inclusion, a new position established in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine to support recruiting underrepresented medical students into UAB residency and fellowship programs and providing critical engagement and support for URIM trainees in the learning environment.
