Hello Everyone,

I want to wish you all a happy Women’s History month! As you probably know, before March was officially designated Women’s History Month in 1987, we celebrated March 8th as International Women’s Day (IWD). But did you know the first IWD can be traced back to 1911?

Our mothers and grandmothers have actually advocated for gender equity in our country for hundreds of years, and the month of March is officially a time to reflect on their accomplishments and to advocate for equity around the world.

Indeed, women today stand on the shoulders of giants. As we acknowledge their achievements, I also want to recognize and thank all the women who work in the School of Medicine for their contributions to UAB, our nation, and the world. You are paving the way for the many girls who will follow you. We see you and recognize your positive influences!

Also, in honor of Women’s History Month, I invite everyone to attend our annual Women in Science and Medicine lecture. This year, we are hosting Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, Division Director for the Division of Infectious Diseases in the UAB Department of Medicine, as our guest lecturer. The lecture is on March 17, 2021 – from 12:00 noon – 1 PM via Zoom. The title of her talk is Building a Career in Medicine: Advancing Women in Science While Advancing Women’s Health.

As we in the School of Medicine continue to work towards greater inclusivity, change—a change that uplifts us all—can happen.

Sincerely,
