About Us
While the Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Housestaff Council is primarily made up of Black/African-American members, it serves as a home for LGBTQ+, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander, Women, and Native American residents and fellows to network. This organization welcomes all housestaff and trainees. Come join us!
The URiM Housestaff has a two-fold mission. First, URiM Housestaff promotes the recruitment of qualified underrepresented minority candidates—following the strategic direction of the Heersink School of Medicine to increase diversity at our institution. Once a candidate chooses UAB, the URiM Housestaff strives to foster a nurturing and inclusive environment for its students.
To achieve this mission, the housestaff works with faculty advisor, Dr. Gregory Payne—alongside other faculty and staff members; such as Drs. Latesha Elopre, Dr. Alice Goepfert, and more.

Interested in Joining?
URiM Housestaff Council is a diverse group of people who are all advocating for the promotion of diversity and inclusion at the Heersink School of Medicine. Open to residents and fellows that are in a Graduate Medical Education focused group, we advocate that URiM students also join and participate in other committee groups within the school—such as SNMA, AMWA, MedPride, etc.
