Steven T. Brown, M.D.Department of Family and Community Medicine Assistant Professor and UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine physician Steven T. Brown, M.D., has created a new elective sports medicine course for UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine third- and fourth-year students.

The new course will give UAB medical students exposure to the specialty of sports medicine and the role of sports medicine within primary care and family medicine. Brown, who specializes in sports medicine and family medicine, sees patients through UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine and is part of a team providing coverage to UAB Athletics, USFL’s Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers, Birmingham Legion FC, Birmingham Bulls hockey, Birmingham Vulcan Rugby, as well as several high schools and youth sports organizations.

In the course, students will gain expertise in sports medicine by participating in clinical rotations, lectures, journal clubs, and athletic event coverage with the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine team.

During clinical rotations, students will join clinic teams caring for athletes in several disciplines, including primary care, non-operative orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, nutrition sciences, and athletic training.

Athletic event coverage will give students a glimpse at the career of a sports medicine physician, where physicians see and treat a wide range of injuries and medical conditions during competitions and practices. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the demands of being a team physician, caring for athletes of all ages, identifying sports-related injuries, and leading a multidisciplinary sports medicine team.

The Sports & Exercise Medicine course (#30-406) is offered on the Birmingham campus and interested students may sign up using the Course Catalog. For those seeking additional information, please feel free to email fmstudenteduc@uabmc.edu for more information.
