The Division of General Internal Medicine is actively fundraising in support of medical education. In honor of two extraordinary clinician-educators who have faithfully served the University, we aim to expand academic excellence within the division, providing protected time for developing cutting edge training experiences to prepare physicians for practice, research, and education.

Honoring Dr. Bob Centor

The Robert M. Centor MD, MACP, Endowment in General Internal Medicine recognizes his 25 years as a central figure in academic medical leadership at UAB. In that time, he has served as founding director for the Division of General Internal Medicine, regional dean for the Huntsville campus, interim dean for the Tuscaloosa campus, and the inaugural associate dean for primary care on the Birmingham campus.

Dr. Centor is a brilliant internist as well as a beloved teacher and mentor. Every day, he models the motto, “We are here to serve our students.” His scholarship is also exemplary. His seminal findings on Group A streptococcal pharyngitis were published more than 35 years ago, and the clinical prediction rule that now bears his name, Centor’s Criteria, has been replicated worldwide and is embedded in clinical guidelines.

Gifts in honor of Dr. Centor recognize his legacy at UAB and will ultimately support an outstanding clinician-educator in internal medicine.

Honoring Dr. Tavo Heudebert

The Gustavo R. Heudebert, MD, MACP, Endowment in General Internal Medicine serves as a tribute to Dr. Heudebert's extraordinary contributions to the field of General Internal Medicine, the University, and to the advancement of medical education. This endowment currently supports Jason Morris, MD, a professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Associate Program Director for the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Heudebert served as Residency Program Director for a decade (2002-2012) and then served as the Vice-Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine for eight years. He most recently served as interim dean for the School of Medicine’s Montgomery Campus.
