Letter from the Chiefs

We are excited and honored to serve the residents, faculty, and staff as the 2018-2019 Chief Medical Residents for the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program. We have enjoyed meeting the fantastic PGY-1s during intern orientation, supporting the PGY-2s during PGY-2 retreat, and celebrating with the PGY-3s during legacy dinner. We hit the ground running with implementing new ideas to build upon the program's legacy of excellence. Since beginning our chief year, we have made several changes to the didactic curriculum.

We have adjusted the inpatient morning report and noon conference curriculum topics to better reflect ABIM areas of interest. Revamping of our approach to our Journal Club Conference and VA Pillars of Practice (POP) Morning Reports to help residents better critically appraise the internal and external validity of articles has been well received. We have added a workshop on microaggressions to our Ambulatory Thursday Morning Conference to increase our residents’ knowledge of unconscious biases.

Interview season has officially begun! We love telling applicants why we love UAB. We brag on UAB’s culture of excellence without ego and family-like atmosphere. Applicants have enjoyed meeting residents at a few of Birmingham’s popular locations, including Good People, Carrigan’s, Moe’s BBQ, and Rojo. We are proud to tell applicants of recent changes made to the program including significantly decreasing the amount of 24+4hour call for residents rotating on the MICU. We relish highlighting the contributions of the Resident Wellness Committee and Diversity Enrichment Committee in making our program wonderful. We share stories from resident social events such as Thirsty Thursday gatherings cheering on the Birmingham Barons Baseball Team and robust kickball games during Camp Dismukes at Oak Mountain State Park. We want applicants to know UAB is an incredible program with exceptional training and phenomenal people!

We look forward to the next six months as we continue in the legacy of Dr. Tinsley Harrison and UAB Internal Medicine Residency alumni. We hope you enjoy this edition of Letters to Tinsley.
