After sharing a very special year as chief residents at UAB, now about to disperse on our separate paths, we reflect on the happenings of the past year.  We think about the privilege of attending the first Legacy Dinner, a magical evening with wine, honey bees, and good old-fashioned conversation, where living legends of UAB shared stories about Tinsley Harrison.  We think about the challenges posed by the highly controversial discontinuation of inpatient services at Cooper Green Hospital, an event that made us even more appreciative of the strong program leadership at UAB.  We think about the tremendous success of the current PGY-2 class, the first group of trainees to have had an intern year significantly impacted by work hour restrictions, as they handled the transition to the PGY-2 year with grace that impressed us all.  We are ecstatic about the excellent fellowship match both of our graduating PGY-3s as well as the residency match of our incoming intern class.  We believe that it was an outstanding year for UAB, and one that will be followed by even better years.

At the Legacy Dinner, Dr. Coghlan shared with us a concept created by the great Tinsley Harrison: E= hH².  Harrison stated that a good teacher must foster not only the ability to think (“h” for head) but also the ability to love (“H” for heart).  Inspired by this, as chief residents, we have given our fullest effort to sustain the tremendous spirit of UAB that drew each of us here four years ago. We each love UAB and hope that the residents and faculty we worked with sensed that. We hope that each of the residents we worked with will, in their own way, continue to uphold that spirit and tradition that is unique to UAB.

Mallika Mundkur will be joining a Clinical Informatics Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in September.  In the past year, Mallika and her husband Mahesh had their first child, a daughter named Lara, who is now fourteen months old. They will be moving to Vienna, VA in August.

Winter Williams will join as faculty in the division of General Medicine at UAB with a dedicated role to Patient Safety and Quality of Care. In the past year, Win and his wife Hennessy had twins, Rowan and Parker, who are now seven months old.  They will be staying in Birmingham, AL.

David Daly will be starting a Cardiology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina.  In the past year, DJ and his wife Lauren have had a third child, Luke. Their other children are Trey and Greycen, who are six and three years old, respectively. They will be moving to Charleston, SC in June.

Brita Roy will be joining the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University.  There she will continue developing her research investigating health disparities in cardiovascular disease.  She will be moving to New Haven, CT in June.
