Dr Fouad

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is excited to announce that Dr. Mona Fouad has been named the inaugural holder of the Edward E. Partridge, M.D., Endowed Chair for Cancer Disparity Research.

Dr. Fouad is a graduate of the Alexandria University School of Medicine in Egypt. After obtaining her medical degree (1977), Fouad went on to complete her postgraduate training at The University of Alexandria Hospital (1979) and her internship in rural health (1980). The next step in Dr. Fouad’s academic career brought her to pursue her master’s degree in public health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham—which she graduated from in 1986.

Currently, Dr. Fouad shares her knowledge by serving as a Professor of Medicine at UAB. She is also actively involved in the training of UAB scholars and fellows, especially those from a diverse and/or underrepresented background. On an international scale, Fouad continues to mentor young faculty with interests in cancer prevention, control, and the elimination of cancer treatment and outcomes disparities.

Alongside her academic and mentoring roles, Fouad works as the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine, Director of the Division of Preventive Medicine, and Founding Director and Senior Scientist of the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC).

Fouad’s leadership has helped establish the validity of health disparities research at UAB and nationally—especially regarding cancer disparities in vulnerable populations. By making these areas a scientific priority, Fouad’s teams were able to experience an unprecedented expansion of the department. It is this type of exceptional leadership that led to her 2017 induction into the National Academy of Medicine.

Through her successes in the aforementioned roles and superior experience, the Board of Trustees has officially approved Dr. Mona Fouad as the inaugural holder of the Edward E. Partridge, M.D., Endowed Chair for Cancer Disparity Research.
