Building Healthy Communities

The MHRC’s community outreach efforts leverage programs, resources, and partnerships in order to have a greater impact on eliminating health disparities. Our work is focused in 25 communities in Birmingham’s inner city where approximately 90% of the residents represent underserved minority populations. Many of these neighborhoods are classified as “distressed”. While residents of this area have access to resources that improve living conditions, enhance home security or allow for low-cost physical improvements, there is a lack of of health and wellness programs within the communities.

The MHRC works to help our neighbors prevent chronic diseases and live healthier lifestyles. By partnering with local community and political leaders, faith-based institutions, public and private schools, businesses and community members, we are able to implement prevention and wellness activities that address the needs of each community.
