John Rinker II, M.D.John Rinker II, M.D., associate professor in the UAB Department of Neurology, has been selected as a recipient of the Association of University Professors of Neurology (AUPN) Faculty Leadership Award.

This award celebrates the essence of leadership, innovation, and commitment that drives advancements in the realm of neurology.

Rinker was nominated by David Standaert, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Neurology, highlighting his exemplary leadership skills and dedication to advancing the department's mission.

“Rinker has served as the UAB Neurology Clerkship Director for the past eight years, a period that has seen remarkable growth in UAB medical student interest in careers in Neurology,” Standaert said. “In recent years, nearly 10 percent of the UAB graduating class has chosen residency training in neurology, a rate more than five times the national average. Rinker’s commitment to excellence in education has had a critical role in this remarkable success, and the students he has inspired are a lasting legacy.”

The AUPN was established in 1967 and officially incorporated in 1968.

It was formed to nurture the growth of educational, research, and patient care programs within academic neurology.

Since its inception, the organization has provided a platform for chairs of departments or divisions of neurology in accredited medical schools in the United States and similar programs in Canada to engage in discussions surrounding academic pursuits and address pertinent challenges.

"I am grateful to Dr. Standaert for this nomination and to the AUPN for this recognition,” Rinker said. “Directing the neurology clerkship has been professionally rewarding, providing me with valuable contact with medical students and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues within and outside the Department of Neurology.

“The increased interest in neurology among medical students in recent years would not have been possible without the contributions of a wide range of faculty, fellows, and residents. I am appreciative of the role I have had in leading this important educational mission of our department."
