Each year, the UAB Obesity Health Disparities Research Center (OHDRC) invites applications for Pilot Feasibility Studies that focus on any area of research related to obesity-related health disparities. Calls for Research Concepts for Secondary Data Analysis on Social Determinants of Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases are released periodically.


Call for Research Concepts: Secondary Data Analysis on Obesity and Health Disparities 

The UAB Obesity Health Disparities Research Center (OHDRC) (U54MD000502) invites research proposals for secondary data analysis in any area of research related to obesity and health disparities.

Number of Awards: Up to two projects will be funded.

Award Budget: Up to $10,000

Award Period: September 2021 – March 2022

Eligibility: Secondary data analysis funding is to support full-time faculty members at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Jackson State University (JSU), Louisiana State University (LSU), or University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Faculty members are eligible if they are 1) NIH-defined New and Early Stage Investigators at the time of funding without current or past NIH research project support or 2) senior investigators new to obesity and health disparities research. Instructor, Assistant, and Associate Professors are eligible to apply. A publication submitted to a peer-reviewed journal within six months of project completion is a required outcome of this project.

Concept Due Date: September 15, 2021

Concept Content (Limited to 2 pages):

  • Study Title
  • PIs/Investigators names and title(s)
  • The problem to be addressed and its scientific relevance
  • Background/rationale
  • Objectives and aims
  • Research question and hypotheses
  • Data (describe the data set, the variables that will be used, sample inclusions/exclusions)   
  • Statistical analysis plan and methods, including power calculations if necessary
  • References (not included in the 2-page limit)
  • Budget on a PHS 398 form (not included in the 2-page limit)

Data set: Applicants must already have access or permission to use their intended data set at the time of submission.
