Scott McClure, MD, and Malcolm Kates, MDThe UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UAB Callahan Eye is pleased to announce the selection of the new chief residents for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. Scott McClure, MD, and Malcolm Kates, MD, have been chosen by their peers to lead the residency program in its fourth and final year.

The chief resident positions are highly esteemed roles within the department, symbolizing the pinnacle of leadership and excellence among the resident body. Selected near the end of their third year of residency, the chief residents play a pivotal role in guiding and supporting their fellow residents, as well as contributing to the ongoing enhancement of the program.

Reflecting on his appointment, Scott McClure, MD, expressed his excitement and gratitude, stating, "I am excited and honored to serve as a chief resident for the 2024-2025 academic year. I have benefitted from the excellent training provided by this residency program for the last two years, and I have seen the work that the chief residents have put into making things run smoothly on a day-to-day basis as well as making improvements to the program. I hope that by serving in this role, I will be able to make some contribution to the program that has served me well and to support my co-residents with whom I have the pleasure of working."

Malcolm Kates, MD, also shared his enthusiasm for the opportunity, highlighting the significance of being chosen by his peers. He remarked, "Being selected as Chief Resident is especially meaningful knowing I was chosen by my fellow residents, unlike faculty as some other programs are. I appreciate the vote of confidence from my peers and look forward to working with Dr. Patel and Dr. Samuels in their new leadership roles as Program Director and Chair, respectively, to continue to improve the program and department."

As chief residents, McClure and Kates will collaborate closely with program leadership to uphold the highest standards of patient care, education, and research within the field of ophthalmology. Their dedication and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and growth of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
