Third-year UAB medical student Shelby Bergstresser was the overall winner of the Southeastern Surgical Congress Gold Medal Award for her presentation at the SESC 2018 Annual Meeting on the staging systems of hepatocellular carcinoma, “Prognostic Value of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Staging Systems.” The Gold Medal Award is a prestigious recognition of excellent research by young surgeons.

“This project has been in the works for more than two years, and I am encouraged to know that other professionals see the value of our research and how we hope to positively impact patient care with our study,” Bergstresser said. “This project wouldn’t have been successful without the support of my mentor, Dr. White, and I want to thank him for all of his guidance over the last two years.”

“I’ve never seen a more composed podium presentation at a national conference from a student,” White said. “Numerous attendings after her talk came to her trying to recruit her to their surgical residencies next year.”

Bergstresser also presented her award-winning research at last month’s American Surgical Congress in Jacksonville, Florida.
