Our faculty are often asked to speak at events and institutions all across the country and the world. While these opportunities serve as valuable professional experiences, there are various reasons why faculty can't attend every speaking engagement to which they are invited.

Such was the case for Division of Transplantation Director Devin Eckhoff, M.D., who was asked to speak at a seminar in Mobile, Alabama, for the Alabama Organ Center. Although Eckhoff couldn’t attend the seminar, he was able to record his lecture in the state-of-the-art UAB eLearning Media Services studio and share the video with the seminar’s organizers to be played at the event.

“It worked remarkably well,” Eckhoff said. “I could look over and deliver my talk straight to the camera, reading the slides in a sound-proof studio.”

Eckhoff also had the ability to schedule a question-and-answer session immediately following his video presentation so that he could field questions related to his lecture live via phone call.

“I had arranged a time where I would be conferenced-called in at the end of my video lecture to answer any questions from the audience, in real time,” he said. “Both the filming and quality of this production was amazing. I highly recommend it.”

Eckhoff was able to hire Media Services to record his lecture for less than what it would have cost to travel to and stay overnight in Mobile.

“Because of the remote location of many of these seminars, it often requires a full day of travel to deliver an hour-long talk,” he said. “This was incredibly convenient for me.”
