Drs. Onwubiko and SparksThe UAB Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Chinwendu Onwubiko, M.D., Ph.D., and Eric Sparks, M.D., as assistant professors to the Division of Pediatric Surgery.

Onwubiko received her medical degree and doctor of philosophy in a dual program from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2010. She then completed a general surgery internship at the center in 2011 and went on to complete a pediatric surgery critical care fellowship from Boston Children's Hospital.

In 2017, Onwubiko graduated from her general surgery residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before embarking on a two-year UAB pediatric endosurgery fellowship. Finally, she completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. She is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons.

Sparks attended the UAB School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree in 2011. He then completed a two-year surgical research fellowship at Harvard Medical School at the Boston Children's Hospital before completing his general surgery residency at Texas A&M Scott and White Memorial Hospital.

In 2018, Dr. Sparks graduated from his pediatric surgery critical care fellowship with the Michigan Medicine Department of Surgery. He then completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto Hospital for Sick Children before returning to UAB.
