2022 Robotics CompetitionAbstracts will open on Monday, June 20 for the 18th annual Academic Surgical Congress (ASC). UAB Department of Surgery had the highest number of abstracts of any institution at ASC in 2021 and 2022.

This year, the congress will be held February 7-9, 2023 in Houston, TX. The ASC is a joint meeting of the two leading associations for academic surgery – The Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) and The Society of University Surgeons (SUS). Together the AAS and SUS boast more than 5,000 members from leading institutions nationwide.

In the past, the ASC has called for abstracts in the categories of:

  • Basic/translational research– studies using in vitro models, animal models, or biological specimens from human subjects
  • Clinical/Outcomes Research– retrospective or prospective studies involving human subjects and/or health services data
  • Education Research– studies focused on medical education with or without involvement of human subjects

Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, encourages faculty and trainees to submit their abstracts to this year’s ASC.

“Research has always been a pillar of our department, and our faculty and trainees represent that from year to year at the Academic Surgical Congress,” said Chen. “Our faculty and trainees are high-performers, and we are grateful to their dedication to research and learning. I encourage anyone considering submitting an abstract to do so.”
