PRISM SURE flyer Untitled PageUAB Department of Surgery will be hosting a Virtual Open House for summer research internship programs on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. via Zoom. Highlighted programs will include Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds (PRISM) and Surgery Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE).

PRISM provides minority high school students an opportunity to grow their understanding of research processes that lead to advancements in patient care and outcomes. Students will be mentored by faculty and research fellows, as they explore clinical research experiences and participate in clinical shadowing in the operation room over eight weeks. Participants also have an opportunity to present their work at a research event held by the Department of Surgery at the end of the internship.

SURE guides participants through basic science and clinical research experiences over an eight-week period, alongside department faculty and research fellows. Students will conduct research projects, receive mentorship from department faculty and research fellows, and participate in clinical shadowing opportunities in the operating room and beyond. SURE allows students to glean first-hand experiential knowledge of the clinical practice and the array of career options in the field of surgery. Participants will also present their research at the UAB Summer Undergraduate Expo and are encouraged to write an abstract and submit their findings to a national meeting (Academic Surgical Congress).

Join us for the Virtual Open House to find out more information and to meet the directors and alumni of both programs.
