Dr. Autumn BeaversUAB General Surgery resident Autumn Beavers, M.D., has been selected as a Fulbright scholar and will study in Tanzania for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Being selected as a Fulbright scholar is a highly prestigious academic honor – with a rigorous acceptance process that stringently reviews applicants’ reasons for visiting their requested host country and potential participants' impact on their careers and communities as global citizens.

A Heersink School of Medicine alumna, Beavers began her general surgery training in 2022. Her clinical and research interests include global surgery and addressing health disparities.

Beavers is also a former Peace Corps participant. During her time in the program, she lived in Burkina Faso for two years, where she educated children on health and science-based topics and led a health initiative for middle-school girls. She currently serves as a returning volunteer to the area.

"It is truly the honor of a lifetime to become a Fulbright scholar and have the opportunity to in live and work in Tanzania,” says Beavers. “Being able to research and study abroad, while gleaning understandings that will benefit my career wherever I may practice, is an incredibly rewarding enrichment to my residency.”

Beavers has received the Gold Humanism Honorary Society Award for her exceptional clinical and interpersonal skills as a medical trainee. She has also been awarded by the NIH INSIGHT Fogarty program. The program provides research training opportunities in low—and middle-income countries for pre- and postdoctoral candidates from the US and LMICs. It is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC), in collaboration with several institutes, including UAB, and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
