Dr. Marinelle Payton is the Assistant Dean for Research and Program Development, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and the Principal Investigator and Director of the Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities (funded by NIH/NIMHD 2012-2017). She joined the JSU community with over 15 years of leadership experience in medicine and public health at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, where she held joint academic and clinical appointments. Dr. Payton has a long history of work to eliminate health disparities in vulnerable populations, serving on many NIH and EPA advisory boards, and has demonstrated an ongoing record of accomplishments that have advanced the field of health disparities. She is well-qualified to provide scientific and administrative leadership, serving in roles such as the Assistant Dean for Research and Program Development and the Principal Investigator and Director of the CDC-funded Institute of Epidemiology and Health Services Research at JSU and Founding Chair of Public Health. Dr. Payton has a research background in studying the environmental exposure of toxins and chronic disease in susceptible populations, utilizing the oldest ongoing longitudinal study of aging (Boston, MA).
