Approximately 136 blocks were completed by members of the community through sewing days. This year’s theme is the 50th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Bib & Tucker Sew-Op has partnered with UAB’s Arts in Medicine to bring year three of The March Quilts to UAB Hospital. The March Quilts’ annual community project sheds light on a theme of civil or human rights through open sewing sessions in the community. This year’s theme is the 50th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia U.S. Supreme Court ruling that knocked down the ban on interracial marriage, setting a course for the rest of the country.

Sewing days were held throughout the UAB campus and Birmingham community, and people were invited to appliqué or embroider a quilt block for the project. All materials were supplied at the sessions. Approximately 136 blocks were completed and turned in for the quilt. The quilt blocks were then put together into a quilt by seven members of Bib & Tucker Sew-Op. A grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham helped cover the cost of the quilt’s creation.

Bib & Tucker Sew-Op will unveil this year’s Loving quilt along the walkway between the North Pavilion of UAB Hospital and the UAB Women and Infants Center, second floor. Quilts from the previous years of the project will also be on display. Members will be on hand to discuss the project, UAB’s Arts in Medicine program, and Bib & Tucker Sew-Op.
