Dr. Harper is Dean, Professor and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair in Nursing in the UAB School of Nursing. She also serves as Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center on International Nursing at UAB, one of ten centers in the United States that focus on nursing education to improve the care for children and families through global outreach. Dr. Harper's scholarly work breaks new ground in joint academic/service partnerships for nursing workforce development.

Research/Clinical/Teaching Expertise and Interest

During her tenure at UAB, the School has added new educational opportunities, including the Accelerated Master’s in Nursing Pathway, the Joint DNP program, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Nursing Academy, the Nurse Anesthesia program, Paul D. Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows program, Clinical Nurse Leader track, and the International Nursing Leadership Institute. Additionally, the School has more than doubled student enrollment and graduation and has substantially grown the research and practice enterprise. A hallmark of her leadership is her collaboration among disciplines. Dr. Harper has taught and led at all levels of nursing and medical education, including the inaugural nursing program at George Mason University, the University of Maryland School of Nursing, The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
