Have you ever wondered how doctors diagnose diseases? What happens to the blood sample you give at your Doctor’s office? How the risk for the development of a heart attack is determined?

Welcome to the world inside the medical laboratory, a world where clinical laboratory scientist and other laboratory professionals find answers to these questions and much more.

With an aging population and the expansion of scientific knowledge including cell marker technology, bioengineering, biogenetics, DNA technology and cancer research, the role of the laboratory scientist is growing and expanding. Choose a career of the future, a career where that exploration will never end.  Choose a career in Clinical Laboratory Science.
The Clinical Laboratory Science degree program is designed to lead to a professional licensure (ASCP), American Society for Clinical Pathology. While there is a national professional exam, ASCP-BOC, associated with the clinical laboratory science licensure, specific licensure requirements still vary from state to state and by professional organization. UAB is working to develop an online, publicly-accessible database to assist in providing this state-by-state information. In the meantime, if you are interested in learning about potential professional licensure requirements in your state for a specific degree program, please contact UAB State Authorization at stateauth@uab.edu, or call Dr. Lisa Reburn at (205) 934-3258.
