Michelle Cardel, Ph.D., M.S., R.D., F.T.O.S., alumna of the School of Health ProfessionsPhD in Nutrition Sciences program (2012) and M.S. in Nutrition Sciences program (2009), to receive the UAB National Alumni Society (NAS) Young Alumni Rising Star Award at a special reception at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts on Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Cardel, who also earned her R.D. and completed her Dietetic Internship at UAB, is an obesity and nutrition scientist, registered dietitian, and assistant professor at the University of Florida (UF). She is also the Director of the UF Obesity Research Alliance and an Associate Director for the Center for Integrative Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases. Her research focuses on health disparities, factors influencing obesity, and pediatric obesity treatment.

This is not the first UAB honor Cardel has earned. She is a past recipient of the UAB President’s Diversity Award, the Charles Barkley Young Investigator Award, UAB Outstanding Woman Award, and the UAB NAS Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Cardel is an active leader in the field of obesity and nutrition sciences. In 2018, she was named a fellow of The Obesity Society. She currently serves as past-chair of the Obesity Research Interest Section for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and in 2015 received the ASN Grand Prize for Young Minority Investigators Award. She has also presented her obesity research at national and international conferences, including the National Academy of Medicine.

Each year the UAB NAS Young Alumni Rising Star Award goes to those who “excel personally and professionally while committing time and energy in service to the university and local community.”
