RS2956 cyclotron 93 scrUAB is home to the most powerful medical cyclotron in the U.S.The UAB School of Health Professions Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) program was the first in the U.S. to transition to a Master of Science entry level status. The entire educational system is transitioning in response to the expanded demands in the field for technologists that can manage the complexities of blended imaging technology.

UAB NMT’s world class faculty and recently renovated facility made them the perfect choice to launch the new Master of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology entry level program.

“Another reason they chose UAB NMT was our direct access to the new Advanced Imaging Center that is part of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center,” said Norman Bolus, MSPH, MPH, CNMT, FSNMMI-TS, program director, UAB Nuclear Medicine Technology program. “This state of the art facility houses the largest, most powerful medical cyclotron in the United States and it has one of only a handful of PET/MR units as a clinical / research unit.”

The UAB NMT program is designed to provide graduates with skills in imaging techniques like Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) paired with Computed Tomography (CT) as SPECT/CT imaging. The program also teaches students to work with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and CT imaging as PET/CT as well as the newest endeavor in the field, Magnetic Resonance Imaging coupled with PET imaging as PET/MR.

On the therapy side of nuclear medicine, which includes using liquid or semi-liquid radiation sources to treat cancer or over active glands, the paired use of diagnostic and therapy agents have led to a new up and coming industry being called Theranostics.

With this new emphasis, U.S. News & World Report ranks NMT among the Top 20 “Best Healthcare Jobs” that includes options like nuclear medicine technologist as primary certification and with dual certification computed tomography and MRI.

UAB NMT, a division of learning at UAB for more than 40 years, is the only program of its kind in the state of Alabama. With a faculty that has more than 50 years’ combined experience in the industry you will have a most unique learning exposure.
