At UAB, collaboration is more than just a shared value; it is a fundamental aspect of the learning experience, especially within the School of Health Professions. Through classroom collaboration and team-based learning, I have developed skills and insights that have made me a stronger teammate both academically and in my future career.

From the very first day of my program, the emphasis on teamwork was evident. Group projects were not merely assignments but opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives and cultivate a deeper understanding of complex health issues. For instance, in a recent project focused on public health initiatives, my team comprised individuals from various health disciplines. Each member brought unique insights—ranging from clinical knowledge to community engagement strategies—allowing us to create a comprehensive and effective proposal. This experience highlighted the importance of recognizing and valuing different strengths within a team, reinforcing the idea that collaboration leads to richer outcomes.

Moreover, team-based learning has equipped me with essential communication and conflict resolution skills. In one particularly challenging group assignment, differing opinions on our approach led to tension. Instead of allowing disagreements to fester, we implemented structured discussions that encouraged open dialogue. This experience taught me how to listen actively, express my viewpoints constructively, and find common ground—skills that are vital in any collaborative environment. By navigating these challenges together, we not only completed the project successfully but also strengthened our relationships as teammates.

The collaborative environment at UAB has also fostered a sense of accountability. Knowing that my contributions directly impact my peers motivates me to come prepared and engaged. This accountability extends beyond individual projects; it cultivates a culture where we hold each other to high standards. I’ve learned that being a strong teammate means being reliable and supporting my peers in their learning journeys. This mindset has prepared me for future professional settings, where teamwork and mutual support are crucial in delivering quality patient care.

Furthermore, the collaborative experiences at UAB have instilled in me a deep appreciation for interdisciplinary teamwork. As future health professionals, we will work alongside a variety of specialists to provide comprehensive care. The skills I have honed through classroom collaboration—adaptability, respect for diverse viewpoints, and effective communication—are directly transferable to this future landscape. I feel confident that my ability to collaborate with others will not only enhance my contributions but also improve patient outcomes.

In conclusion, my experiences with collaboration and team-based learning at UAB have profoundly shaped my development as a teammate. I have learned to value diverse perspectives, communicate effectively, and hold myself accountable to my peers. As I move forward in my academic and professional career, I carry with me the lessons learned from my collaborative experiences, ready to contribute positively to any team I join. The Blazer Tour symbolizes this journey of growth, reminding me that every shared experience at UAB strengthens not just myself, but the entire community of health professionals we are becoming.

As a UAB student, my experiences with classroom collaboration and team-based learning have transformed my abilities as a teammate. The emphasis on collaboration within UAB’s School of Health Professions aligns with my values and aspirations, enabling me to develop both academically and personally.

One of the most impactful experiences I had at UAB was during a team-based learning course in the MSHA program. Our class was divided into small groups to tackle complex case studies requiring input from multiple disciplines. Initially, I was hesitant to speak up, unsure of how to contribute effectively. However, as we worked together to analyze the cases, I quickly realized the importance of leveraging each member’s unique strengths and perspectives. Through discussions, we navigated the challenges of healthcare scenarios, and I learned to appreciate how diverse viewpoints can lead to more comprehensive solutions. This experience taught me that being an effective teammate is not just about sharing my knowledge but also about actively listening and valuing the contributions of others.

Another significant aspect of my collaboration experience at UAB has been participating in group projects focused on designing community health initiatives. In these projects, my teammates and I learned to delegate responsibilities according to our strengths and interests. I often took on the role of organizing our research and ensuring we met deadlines, while others focused on creative aspects like presentation design and outreach strategies. This division of labor made our projects more efficient and fostered accountability among us. We knew that our collective success depended on each person fulfilling their role. This understanding has made me a more reliable teammate, as I now prioritize open communication and mutual support in all collaborative efforts.

Additionally, UAB’s emphasis on peer feedback has enhanced my collaborative skills. In various courses, we were encouraged to provide constructive feedback to one another on presentations and group assignments. This process was challenging, requiring me to articulate my thoughts honestly and respectfully. However, I found that giving and receiving feedback was invaluable in honing my ability to work with others. It cultivated a culture of trust within our teams, where we felt safe to express ideas and critique each other’s work. As a result, I learned to approach difficult conversations with empathy and a focus on improvement, essential qualities in any collaborative setting.

Through these experiences at UAB, I have developed into a stronger teammate who values collaboration as a means of achieving shared goals. The ability to work effectively with others, respect diverse opinions, and communicate openly has become integral to my approach in both academic and professional settings. As I continue my journey in healthcare administration, I carry these lessons with me, understanding that collaboration is not just a skill but a fundamental value that drives innovation and success in any team endeavor. UAB has equipped me with the tools to foster a collaborative environment, and I am excited to apply these skills in future projects, ensuring that together, we can create a positive impact in the healthcare field.

Classroom collaboration as a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will forever be a reason why I am a proud blazer. Throughout my time at UAB as a student physical therapist, I have been able to create connections, build friendships, and optimize opportunities to improve my self-development. Classroom collaboration has shaped my communication skills for clinical rotations and soon to be workforce. It has been a unique feature of the curriculum that makes my graduate experience memorable.

Students of my cohort and students of other disciplines often work together during simulations, assignments, volunteer events, etc. Some of the classroom collaborations include teaching wheelchair skills through a program called “Come Roll with Me” and providing physical therapy services to children with auditory and visual impairments at The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind through a program called “We Can Do It”. Collaborations such as those mentioned previously has given me insight of the importance of teamwork, which is vital for multi-disciplinary healthcare approaches for patients. We learn to work together with diverse, multi-disciplinary groups and adapt to each individual needs to promote an inclusive environment. Working effectively as a team is one of the key factors in increasing chances of a desired outcome.

Through classroom collaboration, I have grown tremendously as a future healthcare professional by learning techniques and strategies for effective communication. Knowing how to communicate with your peers and interact with your patients is a huge component of physical therapy. Through team-based learning, I have learned how to connect with other disciplines without overstepping boundaries, how to approach and navigate difficult situations, and how to become an asset to my team. I have used all these essential elements throughout my clinical rotations and in the classroom, which has help me build rapport with my peers and my patients.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham values collaboration/team-based learning, and this value is the reason why I am thriving and will thrive as a healthcare professional. It has equipped me into the young lady I am today and has been a reason why UAB continuously birth brilliant minds into the world. Issac newton once stated, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”. Thank you, UAB, for your collaboration.

UAB’s collaboration in the classroom has profoundly shaped me into a stronger teammate, showing me how to become a committed, powerful team member with shared objectives while also growing me as a student at UAB. Through various group projects, team-based learning, and group study sessions, I’ve developed meaningful relationships, cultivated essential skills, and had the opportunity to make a positive difference in others' lives. These experiences have not only shaped me as a student but also as a future healthcare professional.

In my first semester, I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand when I enrolled in HRP 101, where we were tasked with completing a group service project. My group chose the Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC), and this choice marked the beginning of a journey that has continued to inspire me both inside and outside the classroom.

Together, we began brainstorming ideas, reached out to RMHC coordinator, and were thrilled to be given the opportunity to help kick-start the Happy Wheels Cart. This program allowed us to give back and ignite hope in the patients and their families. However, this service project didn’t just end once the semester did. It planted a seed of compassion and a desire to continue giving back. Inspired by our work with RMHC, I began volunteering at Children’s Hospital. Now, I work on the art cart and am beginning to see the start-up of the Happy Wheels Cart, which brings me immense joy knowing that my collaboration in HRP 101 is going to help make a difference in children’s lives. Knowing that our group effort is going to play a role in brightening the lives of sick children is incredibly rewarding. Also, the bonds formed with my group members was strong enough that we continued to work together in another class, which speaks to the lasting influence of collaborative efforts.

Beyond service projects, collaboration plays a key role in my academic success. I often lead study groups with friends, where we break down difficult topics, discuss key concepts, and support each other through complex coursework. These group sessions are not just about passing the class; they reinforce understanding to fully grasp each topic. It’s a win-win situation. Each member of the group contributes their strengths, and we all benefit by achieving our shared goal of academic success. This approach to learning has taught me that teamwork amplifies individual efforts and leads to better outcomes, both in the classroom and beyond.

Lastly, as I prepare for a career as a physician assistant, I recognize that these skills are crucial in healthcare. Collaboration, teamwork, and communication are essential in providing quality patient care, and my experiences at UAB have equipped me with a strong foundation. By working together inside or outside of the classroom, we can achieve greater success and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
