Brooke Miller, a first-year student in the  UAB School of Health Professions’ Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences – Clinical Track – Dietetic Internship program, received the Emerging Leader in Health and Wellness Student Award from UAB Employee Wellness. This award is unique in that it recognizes students, registered dietitians and professionals who use innovative approaches to promote healthy environments across Alabama.

Miller received this award in recognition of her commitment and efforts to promoting wellness within the community and on the campuses of Auburn University and UAB.

“I'm so honored for this award and thankful for the opportunities I've had for involvement and leadership in various health and wellness related activities throughout my time at Auburn and UAB,” said Miller. “I plan to continue promoting health and wellness to individuals in my community and beyond in my future career endeavors.”

As an undergraduate, she served as a student nutritionist for the inter-professional education clinics where students of various health professions provided free health screenings to underserved members of the Auburn/Opelika community. Miller was also a member of the Auburn University Nutrition Team where she worked directly with the campus dietitians to provide nutrition services to university students and faculty members.

Currently she is a member of the Birmingham District Dietetic Association, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and has participated in the “Take Your Child to the Doctor” day to provide free health screenings and educational sessions to children and parents in attendance. In the spring of 2020, Miller will join the UAB School of Health Professions student-led Firehouse Shelter Clinic program where she will provide a nutrition education presentation to Shelter clients.

“Brooke has demonstrated a strong desire and ability for promoting wellness over the course of her undergraduate and graduate career,” said Carleton Rivers, MS, RDN , program director, UAB Dietetic Internship program. “I have no doubt that Brooke will go on to become a leader in the area of health and wellness, making a positive impact on both individuals and communities. On behalf of the Department of Nutrition Sciences, we congratulate Brooke on her outstanding recognition!”

Miller received the award at the Innovations in Wellness Conference presented by UAB Employee Wellness on Friday, November 15, 2019. In addition, she and the other winners will be featured as a live guest on Alabama Public Television and receive complimentary registration to the 2020 Innovations in Wellness Conference.
