IMS @ UAB, June 9-12, 2020

The Office of Interprofessional Simulation (OIPS) is hosting the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) Institute for Medical Simulation (IMS) on the UAB campus at Quarterback Tower, June 9-12, 2020. This course provides a comprehensive training for experienced educators with an interest in teaching clinical, behavioral, and cognitive skills using healthcare simulation. This is the seventh time the course will be offered at UAB, although many UAB faculty have attended the CMS course in Boston at the CMS facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

CMS provides the IMS course several times a year at qualified facilities for simulation educators who seek to create high-quality healthcare simulation programs. This course immerses healthcare simulation instructors in a multi method course wherein participants learn how to teach clinical, behavioral, and cognitive skills through simulation. The course draws from the disciplines of aviation, healthcare, psychology, experiential learning, and organizational behavior. Participants explore simulation-based teaching methods applicable across the healthcare education spectrum, including undergraduate and graduate medical, nursing, and allied health domains. The daily formats vary and include simulation scenarios, lectures, small and large group discussions, and practical exercises with feedback. Typically, these courses also offer a couple of social evenings for networking and sharing experiences.

At UAB, course participants will be selected by OIPS in consultation with OIPS stakeholders to provide broad representation. The goal will be for participants to gain skills which they can use to train others in the provision of simulation in the future.
