Problems posted in UAB Solution Studios™ originate from various groups, including:

  • Graduate students at the UAB School of Nursing. These students are taught a 5-step process of design thinking that culminates in their identifying clinical problems that are posted on the site.
  • Clinicians at UAB Hospital and Children's Hospital. Clinicians partner with UAB Solution Studios™ to identify clinical problems that are posted on the site.

Clinicians

Our clinical partners identify a significant clinical problem that would transform healthcare if it were solved. They then serve as mentors to student teams, guiding students through shadowing experiences and helping them refine and test prototypes.

Faculty

UAB faculty may become clinical partners if they have a faculty practice. We also seek other faculty members who will lend their expertise to specific projects and mentor student teams.

How can I become a clinical partner/faculty mentor?”

We will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire about the problem. We will then post it on the website. If students choose your problem, we ask that you allow them to shadow you to learn as much as they can about the problem. We also ask that you act as a collaborator/mentor if student teams form to try to address the problem.

Students

Undergraduate students in the Honors College, the School of Engineering, and School of Nursing have opportunities to participate in courses that are delivered through UAB Solution Studios™. Graduate students in the Schools of Engineering and Nursing may participate as well.

How do students get involved?

STEM students from the UAB School of Engineering, the Science & Technology Honors Program, and the School of Nursing access the UAB Solution Studios™ website (currently posted in the Canvas Learning Management System) to learn more about clinical problems. Students contact clinical partners directly to arrange for times to shadow. They then form teams to implement the design thinking process and work with the clinical partner to propose solutions.
