School of Public Health hosts virtual grant-writing workshop for Aga Khan University

In fall 2021 a group of faculty and staff from the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH) hosted a research grant-writing workshop with colleagues at the Aga Khan University in both Karachi, Pakistan and Nairobi, Kenya.

Next steps for this collaboration between UAB SOPH and AKU are underway. “My deep thanks go to all of our UAB colleagues for their generosity in both time and knowledge sharing, as well as to our AKU colleagues. This was the result of several months of planning with our partners at AKU, setting the stage for new collaborations,” said Dean Erwin, who also participated in the workshop every morning. “It was inspiring to see and hear the engagement on research across the globe!”

Researchers are learning how to understand stigma and bring people back from ‘social death’

Fear and self-loathing play a role in conditions from cancer to HIV and COVID-19, spurring a flood of new NIH funding for stigma research. This summer, UAB researchers led — and participated in — a first-of-its-kind “crash course” to bring more investigators into the field.

"More and more, researchers realize that people have different identities and experiences, and if you don't really deal with all of those in an intervention, you are missing the whole person," said Janet Turan, Ph.D., professor in the School of Public Health and director of the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health. Janet Turan and her research partner and husband, Bulent Turan, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, are pioneers in developing conceptual frameworks to understand intersectional stigma and research methods to study it.
