UAB’s first Creed Week takes place March 23-30!

As part of the institution-wide launch of UAB’s new creed – the “Blazer Way” – the University will host its first Creed Week March 23-30, 2019. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and stakeholders are invited to attend a weeklong celebration packed with events and programs that highlight the five tenets of the Blazer Way:

Honor and Integrity
Diversity
Innovation
Service
Scholarship

So, what is the Blazer Way and how did it evolve?

In December 2017, a committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni – from areas spanning from Student Affairs to School of Medicine to Athletics – were commissioned to develop a guiding statement of belief for the University of Alabama at Birmingham; a unified language to describe the exceptional UAB Blazer culture. After thoroughly researching other university models, as well as the oaths and mission statements of all UAB units and professional schools, the official University Creed and accompanying tenets were born.

Everyone is invited to participate in these events and celebrate what it means to be a Blazer. The 2019 Creed Week schedule is as follows:

Saturday, March 23

Into the Streets | Tenet: Service
8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. | HSC Amphitheater
Join UAB Student Involvement & Leadership and the Leadership and Service Council as they connect with the Birmingham community through a day of service. Students, faculty, staff and alumni are also encouraged to bring supply donations in support of Blazer Kitchen.

Monday, March 25

Tabling with Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship | Tenet: Innovation and Scholarship
10 a.m.-12 p.m. | HSC 140, Off-Campus Student Lounge
The UAB Student Accelerator is a free, non-credit bearing program provided by the Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship offering workshops, lectures, panel discussions, networking events and structured multi-week accelerator cohort programs.

Wednesday, March 27

Come meet members of the UAB Police Department, learn about the various services they offer, and take a moment to thank them for all they do to keep our community safe.

Join Veteran’s Services and UAB ROTC to hear a panel of veterans speak about their journeys of sacrifice and loyalty to the country. Following the panel, attendees will view a showing of the film “Hacksaw Ridge.”

Stand Up, Speak Out Documentary & March Quilts | Tenet: Honor & Integrity and Diversity

In celebration of Women’s History Month, join us for the documentary “Stand Up, Speak Out.” The film depicts one of the first female lawyers in Alabama who fought tirelessly for equal rights in the 1930s and beyond. Prior to the film, attendees can also take part in the creation of March Quilts, a project to honor Alabama’s Unsung Heroines in partnership with Woodlawn’s Bib and Tucker Sew-Op.
