Of more than 60 UAB students, student organizations, faculty and staff nominees highlighted at the 2017 Student Excellence Awards on March 30, nine esteemed campus leaders took home awards. The annual banquet ceremony was hosted by Student Involvement & Leadership in the Hill Student Center Grand Ballroom as a celebration of the outstanding leadership and service contributed to UAB’s campus and community during the 2016-2017 school year.
“This was a great opportunity to recognize students and student supporters – of all classifications -- for their constant commitment to UAB excellence,” said Coordinator of Student Activities Jessica Nathan Brown. “So many of our campus leaders and organizations devote time, resources and effort to ensure both UAB and the greater Birmingham community thrives, but they don’t always receive their due credit. The Student Excellence Awards is a wonderful way to both congratulate and encourage them for their effort, leadership and service.”
2017 Student Excellence Awards winners include:
- Student Organization Advisor of the Year – Jennifer Griffin, Student Involvement & Leadership
- Rising Star Award – Mark Borden
- Excellence in Service – Shima Dowla
- Inclusive Campus Commitment – Linaa Rohman
- Outstanding Scholastic Achievement – Yulianna Jimenez
- Outstanding Student Leader – Katie Rickels
- Outstanding Community Service Project – Run, Jump, Throw hosted by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
- Program of the Year – Nuestra Independencia hosted by Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. & Dia De Los Muertos Celebration hosted by UAB Spanish and Latino Association
- Outstanding Student Organization – Indian Cultural Association
Finalists were selected through peer-nominations based on a variety of factors, including student/faculty/staff volunteer work, campus leadership, dedication to inclusion, academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and more.
