Explore UAB

Student Experience

New and returning students will get their first glimpse of what the Magic City has to offer at “The Taste of UAB” on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  Through local music, food trucks, city attractions and UAB resource vendors, this inaugural outdoor festival will offer Blazers -- many of whom are new to the city and the surrounding campus community – a chance to see, taste and feel the real Birmingham.

The Taste will take place on UAB’s campus in and directly outside of the Hill Student Center, including the HSC Patio, Amphitheater and 5A parking lot. The area will be broken into three unique “zones” that focus on different aspects of student engagement.

Participating food trucks and cuisine will include:

  • Magic City Eats (by UAB Campus Dining) | Americana
  • Broad Street Peaux Boys | Sandwiches
  • NOLA Ice | Snowballs
  • City Bowls | Fruit Bowls
  • Paradise Chow | Tiki-Style
  • iCantina | Mexican

Representatives from local attractions – in the areas of tourism, fun at night, outdoor activities and lifestyle – will include:

  • High Point Climbing and Fitness
  • Vulcan Park & Museum
  • Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
  • Birmingham Museum of Art
  • Birmingham Zoo
  • Top Golf
  • Plato’s Closet
  • Publix
  • iPush Magazine

Most importantly, students be able to talk to UAB officials about helpful services and resources available to them on campus, including UAB Parking & Transportation, Facilities, UAB Police, Athletics, Campus Recreation, Blazer Bucks, Student Multicultural & Diversity Programs, Off-Campus Student Services and more.

Additional entertainment will be available via Blaze Radio, live performances on the UAB Amphitheatre stage, a community mural painting hosted by Aura Literary Arts Magazine, an interactive gaming corner, as well as remote broadcasts from UAB Student Media “On the Sidelines” sports show and more. Media partners from Hot 107.7 Radio, iHeart Media and 95.7 Jamz will also be available with free concert ticket giveaways.

“UAB is the largest employer in Alabama, a world-renowned research facility, and rapidly expanding university,” said Patrick Johnson, Student Media Production Manager and Taste of Birmingham Co-Coordinator. “We just want to give students a snapshot of all elements that make the UAB and Metro Birmingham such a dynamic place to live.”
