As commencement approaches at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications (SAMAC) is celebrating one of its own, Jaren Jones, who will graduate on May 1 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing after several years of impactful work as a student staff member.

Jones joined SAMAC as a sophomore and, from the start, recognized the collaborative and uplifting culture that defines the team. Like many students entering their first professional role, she initially questioned whether her experience matched that of her peers. Still, she credits SAMAC’s supportive environment for helping her grow. “There was never a moment that I felt like I couldn’t reach out,” Jones said. “If I had questions or concerns, they were always addressed.”

As a social media assistant, Jones played a key role in shaping content for one of the university’s most visible student-facing platforms. What began as an intimidating responsibility quickly became a defining part of her experience. “I had no idea how much effort and consideration goes into every post,” she said. “It’s exciting to contribute to something that plays such a significant role in students’ experience on campus.”

Among her favorite memories are covering campus events like Campus Dining’s Mardi Gras programming and conducting interviews, including one with Miss UAB 2024, experiences that pushed her outside of her comfort zone and strengthened her storytelling and media production skills. Beyond the work itself, Jones emphasizes the relationships she built along the way, crediting fellow student staff members for shaping her journey both professionally and personally.

As she prepares to graduate, Jones leaves behind a message for future SAMAC student staff: “Put yourself out there, it’s going to be intimidating, but it’s necessary,” she said. “Cherish the memories and take every opportunity. They’ll mean more than you realize.”

Jones’ time in SAMAC reflects the very mission of Student Affairs: creating meaningful opportunities for growth, connection, and student success. As she takes her next steps, Jaren’s impact on the office, and the students it serves, will continue to be felt.
