Student Experience

Here at UAB Student Affairs, our goal is to empower students to have a voice and thrive within UAB’s campus With Student Affairs’ many departments and opportunities messaging plays a key part in reaching and educating students about important information. This is where the council comes in, this group of students come together weekly to discuss what UAB students want to hear and see and how the university can share resources to meet those needs. The council’s goal is to guarantee that students have a seat at the table and are involved in the university marketing process.

I am a transfer student, but UAB made it so easy for me to transition in and find my people. I look forward to what my senior year will bring! Go Blazers!

Rahm Bakshi SAMAC

Rahm Bakshi- Senior, Neuroscience

Starting my UAB journey
In the fall of 2017, I embarked on my UAB journey. Everyone raved about the best medical city in the southeast, and as a recent AP Biology student, I knew my calling.

I am now a senior and well, I don’t have much time left on campus. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the campus green and the amenities UAB offers.

My favorite UAB memories were
The year 2017 was a great time to be a UAB freshman. We were given the privilege of spending time at Legion Field once again! School spirit was high and I started to branch out. With the help of the Honors College, I found a group of individuals that are life-long friends. We push each other to our greatest potential, even during the hardest times. I also learned how to be an effective leader and communicator.

I cannot be appreciative enough of UAB’s Office of Student Involvement and how they are excellent at developing our hearts and minds. The UAB Ambassador program alone has helped professionally and prepared me for the future ahead.

My advice for you, Blazer
For incoming students, I hope you love this institution and take advantage of the abundant opportunities and resources. Go to class, make good relationships, and immerse yourself in the city of Birmingham. Green and Gold will never get old!

Benignie Dorsainvil SAMAC Cropped

Benignie Dorsainvil – Senior, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health

Hello my name is Benignie Dorsainvil , I am a rising Senior here at UAB majoring in Biomedical Sciences and Public Health while minoring in Chemistry and Art Studio. I was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti but raised in Tampa, Florida.

Using my love for service and people I have decided to pursue the path in medicine and then ultimately work for the World Health Organization. In the future, as a doctor and a public health professional, I want to use my knowledge of public health to leave a long-lasting impact on the communities that I work with. Some of the reasons I chose to attend UAB is because I fell in love with the campus, the people and the support the UAB community provide to their students.

After graduating from UAB I hope to leave behind the legacy that throughout my time here I created a space for the people around me that led them to never doubt their goals and aspirations. During my time here at UAB, one thing I have come to admire about UAB students that I have encountered is that they are truly committed to change the world by being unafraid to deconstruct unjust and unfair systems while working through circumstances , pressures and fears unknown to us.

Alan Roper SAMAC

Alan Roper – Senior, Accounting and Medical Industrial Distribution

Hi! My name is Alan Roper. I am a senior from Trussville, Alabama majoring in accounting and medical industrial distribution. I am excited to be working with the SAMAC team to provide you, UAB students, some fun and helpful information as you spend the next few years here growing, learning, and developing a passion for the things that you love to do.

During my time as a UAB student, I have been involved in many clubs and organizations and held a few different titles including the UAB TrailBlazers, UAB Orientation Leader, UAB Ambassador, Student Alumni Representative with the National Alumni Society, Conference Assistant for UAB Housing, and a member of RUF (which is a campus ministry at UAB). I love being involved and being able to learn different skills through these organizations as well as meet new people.

When I was touring colleges, I really wanted to find a campus that would allow me to be involved and give me the opportunity to grow not only as a student, but as a person. There were many colleges that were very underwhelming when I toured them because there was a big college campus in the middle of nowhere and nothing to do outside of their “campus bubble.” However, when I toured UAB, I found that UAB has a beautiful campus, but even more to explore and see just a few blocks in any direction. This urban campus really drew me to UAB and that is how I ended up in the most magical place on earth: The Magic City.

I have loved being UAB for the past three years and cannot wait to get started with my senior year at UAB! I’ve learned so much about myself and how I can use the skills I’ve learned here to go out and be successful in the real world. If I were able to go back in time and give freshman Alan any advice, I would say to make sure to get involved at UAB early, learn how to get organized, and make sure to push yourself out of your comfort zone. With that, I am excited to help bring students at UAB some fun and helpful content from Student Affairs! Go Blazers!
