Spring 2018 Lecture Series kicks off with activist Bree NewsomeUAB is excited to welcome activist Bree Newsome on Monday, Feb. 26 as part of the official kickoff for the Spring 2018 Lecture Series. The event will take place in the Hill Student Center Ballrooms CD. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., followed by Newsome’s lecture and a Q&A session with the audience.

Many know Newsome for removing the Confederate Battle Flag from the South Carolina State House in 2015. Upon reflecting on that day, she noted, “If this act of disobedience can also serve as a symbol to other peoples’ struggles against oppression or as a symbol of victory over fear and hate; then I know all the more that I did the right thing.” While famed for her activism, Newsome also identifies as a filmmaker, musician and public speaker.

This event is free and welcome to all. Come and hear Newsome’s story and learn ways to use your voice as an activist on and off UAB’s campus.

The Lecture Series Committee is composed of students and faculty members that come together and invite producers, authors, community activists and other notable figures to discuss topics centered around current events, leadership, social responsibility and history.
