Student Experience

Fall 2018 Into the Streets took place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 across the greater Birmingham metropolitan area! Each fall and spring semester, hundreds of students gather in front of the Hill Student Center to kick-off Into the Streets — a mass-volunteer initiative run by UAB’s Student Involvement & Leadership and the Leadership and Service Council. Student volunteers came out in droves to clean, educate and assist the Birmingham community through multiple service projects across the city. Staff, faculty and family members were encouraged to support the Birmingham community as well.

More than 500 students attended the fall 2018 Into the Streets which assisted the following organizations:

  • South Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center
  • Jessie’s Place
  • Moss Rock Preserve
  • Glen Iris Neighborhood clean-up
  • Art in Avondale Park Festival
  • Red Mountain Park
  • Village Creek clean-up
  • Woodlawn community clean-up
  • 5 Points South clean-up
  • 2nd Avenue North clean-up

Many students have reported that they’ve uncovered a passion for community issues after volunteering through this event. Coordinators hope next year will be no different.
