These changes are coming as UAB focuses on how to provide needed services to current international students and increase this student population. To reflect the new focus, the Office of International Scholars and Student Services has been renamed as the Office of International Recruitment and Student Services. The staff will move this fall from Hill University Center to Smolian House, where International Orientation and welcome activities will remain core functions. In addition, at this location:
- Tax assistance will be available to international students.
- International Scholars will have a staff member dedicated to providing service.
- Immigration services and assistance with visa related questions will be provided.
Also, the house will continue to offer some short-term housing options for students. The International Mentors program will have office space, and Student Life will provide staff support for coordination of programs such as the popular Fall BBQ, Friendship Partners, Friday lunches and the International Food Fair. The Beta Nu Chapter of Phi Beta Delta will continue to recognize academic achievement and provide international programming; and, working with the College of Arts and Sciences, opportunities for conversational English are being formalized.
UAB is already a destination for students around the world, and these changes give the opportunity to make it even more so. The office will work with current students to recruit more students from their home countries and will share news about progress in that area. Staff members also look forward to hearing from students about other positive ideas for the international student community.
