HUC gets a Facelift, UPDATE

Plastic and temporary walls block our view from the progress in the Hill University Center, but we've got the details about the construction in this post.

Plastic draped from the floor to ceiling covers the area where the Information Desk is located, and blocking the old UAB Ticket Office and overflow seating for Jazzman's is a temporary wall.  So what's going on back there?

You're witnessing the continuation of renovations to the 1st floor of the Hill University Center.  You've seen Jazzman's transformed to a more open space for gathering and sipping the new fall-flavored coffees.  An updated information desk and development of the Blazer Enrollment Center are next.

On the temporary wall next to Jazzman's is a display with renderings and samples of the materials that will be used in the Blazer Enrollment Center, which is pictured below.  This space will become the one-stop shop for students to address a variety of questions and concerns regarding class schedules, student accounts, financial aid, etc.  That's right - no running around to ten offices to take care of your needs.

The dark brown counter space you see in the image is the new Information Desk. Much nicer, right?

UAB just received approval for funds up to $45 million to renovate the HUC over the next few years.  The progress you are seeing now is a separate project intended to brighten and modernize the space until grander construction plans for the building are approved.
