Promote personal responsibility and peer accountability

  • Empower students to address any conflict that may arise in a safe, respectful, and socially conscious manner
  • Educate and support the existing need of students facing insecurities related to basic needs by reducing and empowering students to access campus and community resources, such as the Food and Supply Pantry and dining vouchers
  • Connect students to available resources and options in order to manage their responsibilities and work toward their goals
  • Engage students to take full advantage of available resources and opportunities to make informed decision on their academic success

Fostering the safety of the community by providing personalized services and support

  • Provide an individuated assessment and facilitate resolution of educational, personal and other university concerns that affect the quality of students’ experience by removing barriers and developing an appropriate network of support.
  • Monitor compliance with treatment plans and/or university behavioral expectations
  • Evaluate threat and assess risk to self-and/or the community
  • Foster self-advocacy in students to manage their academic, personal, and fiscal responsibilities
  • Protect the rights of students and individuals in the community by offering individualized advocacy services, interim measures and accommodations

Cultivate growth and success through education and awareness

  • Provide collaborative opportunities for community members to acquire knowledge and understanding in order to improve students’ chances of future success
  • Explain relevant policies and procedures, discuss possible courses of action, and provide guidance, while respecting students’ rights to privacy within the confines of the law and university policy
  • Advocate for students individually and systemically
  • Educate the UAB campus community on how Student Advocacy serves UAB and individual students by coordinating prevention, intervention, and support efforts across campus and community systems to assist at risk students and students facing crises, life traumas, and other barriers that impede success
  • Contribute and support a campus environment that is conducive to the intellectual, cognitive, moral, spiritual, and psychosocial growth of all community members
