INTERGROUP DIALOGUE

  • What is Intergroup Dialogue

    What is Intergroup Dialogue?

"Building bridges between people from different social backgrounds becomes increasingly important as our society becomes more diverse and socially stratified. One way we can foster learning and understanding across differences is to bring college students together to talk and learn from each other, to find ways to communicate, and to understand why it is not always easy to get along or to identify common ground."

    - Ximena U. Zúñiga, Ph.D.

Intergroup dialogue at UAB focuses on bringing students together across difference. Each semester our office aims to facilitate a dialogue focusing on one identity. Two trained peer facilitators lead a 10 week sustained dialogue with a group of no more than 20 students. It is important for all of the participants to attend all 10 sessions to create an atmosphere of trust and authentic communication.

If you would like to apply for the upcoming dialogue on race please fill out this application.

    dialogue on race

"This type of program really opens individuals to finding an understanding in other people’s point of view instead of just defending their own, which Is a really invaluable skill to have in life."

"You cannot get this kind of experience and learning in a classroom."

"I learned a lot about how to express myself, and not automatically defend my position through arguing but by listening and understanding the other person's position."

  • Faith

For many, faith, agnosticism, and atheism are important aspects of their identity. This dialogue group aims to create a space for a small number of students to discuss this aspect of themselves. In conversations such as these, emotions rise, debate ensues, and there is a fast end to positive conversation. To ensure an open space, with intentional conversation, the tenants of dialogue are taught to all participants and will be maintained in the space by two peer facilitators.

We hope to cover an array of topics throughout the course of this dialogue including, your personal relationship with faith or non-faith, interfaith relationships, Islamophobia, the LGBTQ community and faith, and more. If these topics are of interest to you and you would like to participate, please contact us.
