Freshman Housing Policy for Scholarship Students

First-time freshmen who are awarded an academic scholarship are required to live in a UAB residence hall during their first year of enrollment (fall and spring semesters). Students may request an exemption from this requirement, but exemptions are not granted automatically. Each request is considered on an individual basis.

To be considered for an exemption, you must submit a Freshman Housing Exemption Request Form for Scholarship Students no later than May 1 of your senior year. Exemptions may be granted for the following reasons:

  • Living in the principal residence of your parent(s) or guardian(s), which is located within a 25-mile radius of UAB, and demonstrating financial need (as defined by the UAB Office of Enrollment Management) by submitting the 2016-2017 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at beginning on January 1, 2016.
  • Personal compelling circumstances, which are verified by supporting documentation (i.e. letter from a physician for medical circumstances, copy of a marriage certificate for student’s marital status).

Decisions will be rendered after FAFSA results are received (usually in March). If requesting an exemption for personal compelling circumstances only, decisions will typically be rendered within 10 business days. An email notification will be sent to students, informing them of the decision.
