**Notes on Math Placement**

- An ACT math subscore greater than or equal to 27 places you into MA 125 regardless of your high school GPA.
- You always have the option of choosing a lower-level course if you feel you need more preparatory work.
- Students who have completed a college level math course (excluding remedial college math and MA 110 – Finite Math) with a grade of ‘C’ or better are not required to take the math placement exam.
- Students who have completed a college level math course (not remedial college math) with a grade of ‘C’ or better are not required to take the math placement exam.

- Students who took Calculus AP or IB in high school may receive college credit at UAB with the appropriate AP or IB score. To see what credit you may earn, visit www.uab.edu/ap.

**Notes on the Math Placement Test**

- Some students may want to challenge their math placement. You will be notified in your orientation confirmation email which math courses you are eligible to take.
- Math placement tests should be taken online at least one week prior to orientation. Simply log in to BlazerNET using your Blazer ID and strong password to take the exam.
- Please wait 3 days after signing up for orientation to take the placement test as the link will not be available on BlazerNET until then.
- Students may only take ONE math placement test that is one level higher than their current placement (you will see which exam you are eligible to take when you log into BlazerNET).

## Foreign Language

- If you have never taken a foreign language course, you do not need to take a foreign language placement test. You will begin with a 101 foreign language course.
- If you have had one or more years of foreign language in high school (within the last two years), you must take a test in that language before enrolling in the 100-level sequence.
- Native speakers of French, German, and Spanish cannot take a beginning course in their native languages for credit. They must take the online placement test to determine the appropriate level.
- You can take placement tests in French, Spanish, and German online through the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Follow the directions on their website to take the exam. Both you and UAB will see the results immediately, along with a recommendation for the level of classes you should take.

## Physics

- Placement of entering freshmen in physics would be based on their entering math placement (see Math Placement information for entering Freshman) which is based on SAT & ACT math sub-scores plus high school GPA. For example, entering students would have to qualify for MA 125 in order to take PH 201, since MA 106 or MA 107 is pre-requisite for PH 201. Similarly, students would have to CLEP out or have AP credit for Calculus I (MA 125) to directly enroll in PH 221. In both cases, these are fairly high standards.
- If you do not meet the pre-requisites for PH 201 and PH 221, you can begin with Physics 100 or take necessary Math courses to satisfy pre-requisites of PH 201 and PH 221.
- Talk with your advisor to determine if College Physics I (PH 201) or General Physics I (PH 221) is a requirement for your major.
