electric vehicle

UAB Transportation partners with UAB Sustainability to offer electric vehicle (EV) charging on campus for faculty, staff, students, and the public.

There are two types of EV charging stations available on campus: public charging through ChargePoint, and employee-only charging stations located in gated employee parking areas through Clipper Creek.

Please note, electric vehicle charging at UAB is only allowed at the designated charging stations below to prevent potential safety hazards. Use of non-designated spaces and outlets for charging are a violation subject to citation and/or loss of parking privileges.

ChargePoint Charging Stations

There are three Level II ChargePoint charging locations on campus:

  • Parking Lot 5A adjacent to the Hill University Center, with two charging ports
  • Parking Lot 77 adjacent to CHSB19, with two charging ports
  • Express Lot 4 on 5th Avenue S, with four charging ports
Anyone can access the ChargePoint charging locations, including faculty, staff, students, and the public, while actively charging. You do not need a parking permit to use the ChargePoint units listed above, though Lot 5A on University Boulevard next to the Hill Student Center does require an hourly parking fee for all users.

To use the ChargePoint chargers, EV drivers need to download the ChargePoint mobile app. A fee of $1.00 per hour is assessed by the charging station and paid through the mobile app. Certain chargers have increased fees after the first four hours of charging. Most vehicles will fully charge within the four-hour limit.

Employee-Only Charging Stations

Alabama Power Company partnered with UAB to provide employee-only electric vehicle-charging stations on campus.

There are four Level II Clipper Creek charging stations provided free of charge to employees at the following locations:

  • Parking Lot 26 adjacent to the Collat School of Business, with two charging ports
  • Parking Lot 60-C, off 10th Avenue South at Business and Engineering, with four charging ports
  • The 6th Avenue Parking Deck, with four charging ports
  • The 19th Street Parking Deck, with four charging ports

Permits: Employees wanting to access the employee-only electric vehicle charging stations must obtain a special EV permit by bringing their vehicle registration to the UAB Transportation Office located at 608 8th Street South. The vehicle registration must be in the employee’s name and permits must be renewed annually. While use of the charging stations is free, the EV permit will be charged at the rate associated with the lot or deck.

Time Limit:Employee-only charging stations are subject to a four-hour time limit and must be actively charging. Vehicles violating these policies are subject to fine.

Employees who drive an electric vehicle but are not assigned to a lot or deck that supports EV charging should contact UAB Transportation to request parking reassignment.
