UAB Transportation is launching a new reporting tool to ensure the safe and responsible use of electric scooters and bicycles on campus.  The tool allows UAB Transportation and the City of Birmingham Department of Transportation to identify potential issues and work with the vendors to develop quick solutions.  While these micromobility devices are convenient for traveling short distances, risky riding behaviors create an unsafe environment. In addition, randomly parked scooters and bicycles disrupt traffic, create tripping hazards, or block ADA access. 

“We are excited to have micromobility available as an additional option for getting to, from, and around UAB,” said Brian Atkinson, program manager for transportation demand management.  “However, the safe and responsible use of these vehicles is absolutely critical to ensure they are able to remain on campus.”

The City of Birmingham launched a micromobility program in the spring.  Under the program, motorized scooters and pedal-assisted bicycles are available to rent using downloadable apps.  For the protection of riders, pedestrians, and others on the roadways, please follow the current laws related to their usage, including:

• Riders operating a bicycle or scooter must obey the instructions of official traffic control signals, signs and other control devices applicable to vehicles.
• No riding on sidewalks.
• Vehicles must be returned to specifically marked parking corrals.
• Bikes and scooters can be rented by adults 19 years of age or older. Those who are 18 years of age need permission from a parent or guardian. Be prepared to scan your ID before your first ride.
• No scooter riding between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
• No riding while under the influence.
• Helmets are encouraged, but not required.

If you witness unsafe behavior or electric scooters and bicycles parked out of place, be sure to report it to help keep the vehicles on campus.
