The UAB Commission on the Status of Women is dedicated to promoting gender inclusion and equity by supporting and improving options and opportunities for women at every stage of their education and career.
The Commission’s members support work-life balance initiatives, training and development of emerging leaders and community outreach to improve the academic climate and work environment at UAB. These efforts build on UAB’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and are evidenced by the educational achievements of women students, the innovative teaching, scholarship and research by women faculty, and the professional advancement of women staff and administrators. Collaboration with campus and community organizations help us open new doors of opportunity, and we will continue to build a network that enables women at UAB to thrive.

Suits for Succes
A dozen years ago, members of the newly created Commission on the Status of Women had an idea to help disadvantaged women enter or advance in the workforce: dress them for success.
They cleared their closets of work-appropriate attire and accessories, and encouraged their friends and colleagues to do the same. The annual Suits for Success event generates great support in the community collecting boxes of clothing, accessories and toiletries for My Sister’s Closet, an outreach program of the YWCA of Central Alabama.
Outstanding Women
The UAB Commission on the Status of Women presents the awards annually during Women’s History Month to honor women in the UAB and Birmingham communities who have mentored or served other women, taken a courageous stance or overcome adversity to achieve a goal.
Candidates for the award are nominated by UAB faculty, staff and students, Birmingham residents, mentors and others from around the country and are selected by a committee of university and community women. -
Women have played a vital role in the history and the continued success of The University of Alabama at Birmingham. The timeline below highlights many female firsts by recognizing those who blazed a trail while contributing to the foundation and growth of this institution.
