The 1917 Clinic’s mission is to provide compassionate and comprehensive health care for persons living with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. This website is designed to serve patients, family members, significant others, and friends.

Message from our Director

As the Director of the 1917 Clinic I am proud to lead a highly qualified multidisciplinary team of dedicated health care professionals who selflessly serve to restore and maintain the lives of patients infected with HIV.

Working collectively for more than 23 years the dedicated members of this team have positively impacted the lives of more than 6,000 patients and their families.

The 1917 Clinic is a Ryan White grantee since 1999

The 1917 Clinic receives Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act funding to provide access to care for low-income, uninsured and under-insured clinic HIV infected adults. Serving more than 1,880 patients annually, this academically based clinic is the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama.

For 23 years the UAB 1917 Clinic has provided comprehensive core medical and social services to adult HIV infected patients. Medical specialty, dental and mental health services are available onsite through referral.

In 2010 the 1917 Clinic received awards for $1, 927,263 in Ryan White Part B & C funding. The Alabama HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, nested within the UAB 1917 Clinic is responsible for HIV/AIDS vaccine, prevention and treatment research. The Clinical Trials Unit is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIAID.
