Thank you to the UAB community for your enthusiastic involvement in identifying areas for the next Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Over 525 UAB faculty, staff, and students shared their thoughts at one of 17 meetings or through an online survey. The many ideas fit into three categories (enhancing learning, promoting citizenship, and building core competencies) and eleven themes:
The ability to work on teams is critical in today's workforce.
Building a UAB community
Faculty and students are interested in building a greater sense of pride and community at UAB.
Students must learn about the world around them and know how to navigate it.
Students must solve complex problems, handle large data sets, analyze, and make well-reasoned decisions.
We are all members of a global team.
The classroom is not the only site for learning; students learn in many contexts, including internships, team projects, and community service.
Writing clearly and effectively is a skill every student needs.
Opportunities for improvement still exist.
Communication in written, oral, and visual form is highly valued.
Local service learning
By becoming involved in team projects and service at the local level, students become active citizens and see how they can contribute to the community.
Learning extends beyond graduation.
This information will be the basis for selection of the QEP topic that will be a vital part of the 2015 SACSCOC reaffirmation.
President Watts and Provost Lucas have received our findings and, on the basis of your suggestions, will select a QEP topic that provides the best opportunity to improve student learning at UAB. A decision will be made shortly, and a formal announcement to the UAB community will follow.
Thank you for your commitment to UAB and its future.
