Winter weather safety demonstration
September is National Preparedness Month, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham is highlighting the need for each individual to have his or her own personal plans in place for coping with emergency situations.
“Federal, state and local governments spend a lot of time on emergency planning, as do we at UAB,” said JVann Martin, director of Emergency Management for the UAB Health System. “But individuals need to have a personal plan for themselves and their families. Our efforts during National Preparedness Month are geared at helping faculty, students and staff access the resources they need to establish their own personal preparedness plans.”
Each week in September will focus on a different topic. Handouts and information on online resources will be available at booths on campus. Social media messaging will reinforce each topic and provide a guide to resources. Follow #ReadyUAB.
Digital tools for personal preparedness
Winter weather safety will be the focus of the week of Sept. 8-11, followed by hurricane and tornado preparedness during the week of Sept. 14-18. Dealing with long-term utility outages is the focus of the week of Sept. 21-25. The final week of the month will feature a look at digital tools for personal preparedness, such as websites, apps and SMS messaging.
UAB has several tools to assist in managing personal preparedness, including the B-Alert emergency notification system, Rave-Guardian personal safety application and the emergency management website, www.uab.edu/emergency. Other valuable sites include the federal government site www.ready.gov and the state site www.readyalabama.gov. The National Library of Medicine features a digital go-bag with dozens of disaster and emergency apps at www.disaster.nlm.nih.gov/apps.
The month’s activities will wrap up with a lecture by Lisa Craft McCormick, Dr.Ph., associate professor in the UAB School of Public Health, on “Preparing for the Psychological Distress of a Disaster,” at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
